WSU Common Reading Program

2009 Common Reading Program

Personalize Your Learning

Dear Freshmen,

Your 2009 common reading book, "Omnivore's Dilemma:  A Natural History of Four Meals," is an introduction to the exciting intellectual life at WSU.

It is a text your professors will use in classes to explore ideas as you learn to think critically and communicate well.  That will carry over into your residence hall life, where lessons will continue beyond the classroom.

As in previous common reading years, plans are being drawn for many types of events connected with topics raised in the book.  For example ...

  • special presentations by WSU faculty who conduct research in fields referenced in the book
  • film showings
  • a Hunger Banquet and
  • opportunities for civic engagement.

Everyone in your freshman class is reading this book at the same time, but you will want to personalize your efforts.  That will help YOU to get the most out of your efforts and to be well prepared for meaningful discussions with your college friends and faculty.

Your thoughts and questions are part of your collegiate learning experience.  We invite you to use this Web site as a place to get ideas and information to make the common reading experience the best possible one for you.
