Braiding Sweetgrass: Common Reading Exhibition Opens

March 21, 2023

This fall the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU will partner with the Museum of Anthropology and Fine Arts associate professor Michael Holloman to curate an exhibition that responds to and complements this year’s common reading book, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Fine Arts graduate students working with Michael Holloman will assist with curating works purchased or borrowed from Crow’s Shadow Institute for the Arts. Honors students working with Schnitzer Museum staff will also curate works from the museum’s permanent collection that respond to themes from Braiding Sweetgrass. WSU native students and elders from our region will work with Anthropology Department’s Shannon Tushingham to curate baskets, flat twine bags, and perhaps additional items from the WSU Museum of Anthropology collection. The exhibition (with exact title to be determined) will be on view at the Schnitzer Museum from March 21, 2023 to August 2023. Public programming, including a talk by Michael Holloman and possible demonstrations by Northwest Basket Weavers, may be featured as part of the exhibition in collaboration with the Common Reading Program.
