SUMMARY:"Feasting and Fasting in Religious Traditions\," (lecture by Kristine Zakarison)
DESCRIPTION:We enter into this world\, among other things\, hungry! Shortly before we draw our last breath\, we begin our final journey by voluntarily abstaining from food and even water. In the course of our lives\, regardless of ethnicity or class\, we come together and share food in times of celebration and remembrance\, and we may find ourselves forgoing food at times of trauma or sorrow. This rhythm of the human body\, one of feasting at times\, and other times fasting\, has been ritualized in spiritual life in many religions\, cultures\, and historical moments. As the global community looks ahead to the start of three major religions’ observances–Ramadan (February 28)\, Lent (March 4)\, and Passover (April 12)—come join us for a talk by Kristine Zakarison\, a retired minister of the United Church of Christ. Hosted by the WSU Common Reading Program and the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art WSU.

SUMMARY:"Big Apples\, Big Business: How Washington Became the Apple State\,"(lecture by Amanda Van Lanen followed by apple tasting)
DESCRIPTION:Why do so many apples in the grocery store look the same? And why do so many come from Washington? Come hear how Washington became the top apple producing state in the country\, and how\, in the process\, it transformed apples into an industrialized commodity. Many regions in the West attempted to grow apples\, but in Washington big apples became big business thanks to the work of scientists\, investors\, irrigators\, railroad corporations\, marketers\, and apple growers. The history of Washington apples reflects larger changes happening in the American food system—changes that continue to affect our environment and the way we eat today. Dr. Van Lanen is chair of the Humanities Division and professor of history at Lewis-Clark State College and the author of The Washington Apple: Orchards and the Development of Industrial Agriculture; she blogs about food history at historyreheated.com.  After the talk\, Dr. Carolyn Ross of the WSU Sensory Science Center will host an apple tasting. Talk sponsored by the WSU Libraries in collaboration with the Common Reading Program and the School of Food Science.

SUMMARY:"Against the Grain: Lentils and Countercultural Eating on the Palouse\, 1916-24" (MASC Exhibit prepared by Talea Anderson)
DESCRIPTION:In 1989\, Pullman\, Wash.\, was named the Lentil Capital of the World. The reason was simple: the Palouse region produced 98 percent of the lentils grown in the United States. Most were shipped to customers in Europe\, Africa\, and Asia\, where they had been enjoyed for hundreds and even thousands of years. Lentils have deep roots in cultures worldwide\, but how did they arrive in the Palouse? To answer that question\, one must consider countercultural communities in the United States—vegetarians\, vegans\, back-to-earthers\, environmentalists\, activists\, and pacifists who chose a diet that lay outside the norm. Prepared by librarian Talea Anderson\, this exhibit is hosted by MASC through June 2025. See the QR code at the desk to verify attendance for course credit.

SUMMARY:Lecture: "The Ethics of Social Science Research in the Real World" by Bill Kabasenche
DESCRIPTION:The research that Priya Fielding-Singh did for “How the Other Half Eats” is an example of social science research conducted out in the real world\, rather than in a lab. What are the ethical parameters of this type of research? What do researchers owe their subjects in such studies? How should we think about research that might actually change things in the world? And what is the difference between social science research and programs that do intend to change things in the world? These are the sorts of questions we’ll consider\, using a variety of examples of actual social science research studies and considering them in the light of current research ethics standards and regulations. Bill Kabasenche is a faculty member in Philosophy\, and is the Director of Ethics Education for the Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine. SUMMARY:Film screening: "Hungry to Learn" (2019\, 85 min.)
DESCRIPTION:This year WSU is undertaking a year-long consideration of issues of food\, hunger\, and food insecurity in conjunction with use of Priya Fielding Singh’s How the Other Half Eats as the 2024-2025 Common Reading. Come see this 2019 documentary by Geeta Gandbhir that puts these issues squarely in the context of campus life through its exploration about the growing number of students at U.S. universities so financially strapped by tuition that they don’t have enough money to eat.  The documentary explores not just how this hunger crisis is unfolding on American campuses\, but also about what can—and should—be done about it.  Hosted by the WSU Pullman Common Reading Program (shown earlier at 4:30 p.m.; and also Sept. 3).
