SUMMARY:Other Worlds: Exoplanets\, Other Planets Outside Our Solar System (a Planetarium Sky Tour)
DESCRIPTION:This presentation in WSU’s full-dome planetarium will explore the topics of exoplanets: planets that orbit stars other than the sun. This area of space exploration continues to grow at a rapid rate; the first exoplanet wasn’t discovered until 1995\, but the number will reach 4\,000 known exoplanets in 2019. This sky tour will answer questions like: What exoplanets are the biggest? The nearest to their stars? Nearest to the earth? Are any of them habitable? The answer to these questions and more will be provided as WSU astronomers give an update on the exciting search for planets outside the solar system. Come see space in a whole new way\, as well as become acquainted with this fascinating campus resource. Verification of attendance available; note seating is limited to 60. (This special showing is free for WSU students.)

SUMMARY:The Technology and Ethics of Gene Editing
DESCRIPTION:Bill Kabasenche (Philosophy)\, Lisette Maddison (Center for Reproductive Biology)\, and Samantha Noll (Functional Genomics Initiative) on the Technology and Ethics of Gene Editing. Late last year\, news broke that a Chinese scientist\, He Jiankui\, had created the first gene-edited babies using CRISPR technology. This story provoked world-wide concern. What is this technology\, and what benefits can it bring? How is it being used in WSU research projects?  And what are the ethical questions and constraints this technology sparks?  This technology is a powerful example of how emerging technologies also bring with them a host of ethical questions about how we shape our future—and how we decide what that future will be. Verification of attendance available.

SUMMARY:SOONISH Sustainable City Projects: SOE 110 Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Cities are complex systems of energy\, food\, water\, people\, and infrastructure. Cities house most of the world’s population and are places where many decisions about the environment occur. Many people in cities may live their entire lives without leaving an urban setting\, perhaps not even realizing how connected their health and well-being are to the ecosystem provided outside\, and sometimes even within\, the urban area. Come and see poster presentations by students in SOE 110 that compile a semester’s worth of research\, analysis\, systems thinking\, and planning for solutions for many of the world’s mega-cities. It will be a wonder of “soonish” possibilities that may improve and/or ruin everything! Verification of attendance available.

SUMMARY:“Through Western Eyes: Humanitarian Communication and the Rohingya Refugee Crisis”
DESCRIPTION:Bimbisar Irom (Murrow College of Communication) will talk about the Western media coverage of the ongoing Rohingya refugee crisis that originated in Myanmar and has now spilled over into the neighboring countries of Bangladesh\, India\, Thailand\, and Malaysia.  The presentation will explore media coverage of “distant suffering” as a cultural product that draws on earlier iconographies\, ideologies\, and relationships of dominance.  How does the media build proximity and distance between spectators and people they will never meet? This central question will be explored by examining cross platform media artifacts\, including Reuters’ Pulitzer-winning photographs and cutting-edge virtual reality coverage such as the VR documentary\, I am Rohingya. Read about Irom in this Murrow College article. \nVerification of attendance available.

SUMMARY:Reading and Q&A with writer Terese Marie Mailhot from her novel "Heart Berries"
DESCRIPTION:In 1830\, President Andrew Jackson and the U.S. Congress passed the Removal Act\, a bill that forced Native Americans to leave the United States and settle in the Indian Territory west of the Mississippi River\, effectively turning them into asylum seekers in their own land. This history of being forced-refugees is still on the minds of many tribal members in the U.S.\, including artists and authors. Terese Marie Mailhot is a writer from the Seabird Island Band of British Columbia. She is the New York Times bestselling author of Heart Berries: A Memoir. Her book was a finalist for the Governor General’s Literary Award for English-Language Nonfiction\, and was selected by Emma Watson as the Our Shared Shelf Book Club Pick for March/April 2018\, among many other awards. In addition\, she teaches creative writing at Purdue University. Mailhot’s work addresses many themes\, including intergenerational trauma as a result of forced migration. She will read from Heart Berries and answer questions. Mailhot’s visit is sponsored by the Dept. of English’s Visiting Writers Series. \nFor those unable to attend in person\, this reading will also be available via Livestream at https://youtu.be/FX46-xm0lkg or via registration at https://connections.wsu.edu/events-calendar/common-reading-series-reading-by-terese-marie-mailhot/ \nVerification of attendance available.

SUMMARY:“Authoritarianism and Democracy in America”
DESCRIPTION:Steven Levitsky is comparative political scientist and professor of government at Harvard University. He researches Latin America. His 2018 book\, How Democracies Die\, has been a New York Times bestseller and hailed by many publications as a “best nonfiction” title for 2018. As we consider the conditions that create fragile states that in turn create the conditions of forced migration\, Levitsky offers a perspective about how democracies fail—not just through violent coups\, but more commonly through a gradual slide into authoritarianism. \nVerification of attendance provided.
