“Atomic Comics: Evolving Depictions of Science in Comic Books and and Popular Culture” presented by Mark O’English

February 5, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

In this presentation, Mark O’English (WSU Libraries/Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections)  will address the history of how nuclear energy issues have been portrayed (and misportrayed) in comic books on the past 60 years. Once hailed as the shining savior of humanity, nuclear power has moved, sometimes dramatically, sometimes gradually, to generally being viewed as a mistake. O’English will look not at the science of nuclear power, but rather at how depictions of it have evolved over time in pop culture, using comic books as one exemplar, from the serious to the absurd. Verification of attendance available.
