Tammy Crawford and Ashton Lo on “The Benefits of Inclusivity through Sport”

October 12, 2021 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Nelson Mandela stated “Sport has the power to change the world.” As part of our social and cultural being, sport has historically acted as a springboard for increased diversity and inclusivity in our society. This history at WSU includes a 1979 lawsuit filed by women athletes and coaches that resulted in expanded athletic and education opportunities for women under Title IX. Newer controversies about inclusion in sport involve the participation of transgender athletes, with Title IX arguments between used by both sides of the debate. Why is sport important? What constitutes fairness? Does inclusivity in sport limit or promote opportunity. WSU Sport Management Associate Professor Tammy Crawford and former WSU varsity rower and trans person Ashton Lo will discuss these questions in a talk hosted by the Common Reading Program.
