The Technology and Ethics of Gene Editing

March 26, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Bill Kabasenche (Philosophy), Lisette Maddison (Center for Reproductive Biology), and Samantha Noll (Functional Genomics Initiative) on the Technology and Ethics of Gene Editing. Late last year, news broke that a Chinese scientist, He Jiankui, had created the first gene-edited babies using CRISPR technology. This story provoked world-wide concern. What is this technology, and what benefits can it bring? How is it being used in WSU research projects?  And what are the ethical questions and constraints this technology sparks?  This technology is a powerful example of how emerging technologies also bring with them a host of ethical questions about how we shape our future—and how we decide what that future will be. Verification of attendance available.
