Race, Power, and Education: The North American School-Prison Nexus
November 18, 2020 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Johnny Lupinacci from WSU’s Cultural Studies and Social Thought in Education program will present on “Race, Power, and Education: The North American School-Prison Nexus.” This interactive presentation will introduce the relationship between schools, youth identities, and prisons in United States. Dr. Lupinacci will provide an introductory overview of the school-to-prison pipeline as part of what many researchers are referring to as the North American “prison industrial complex.”
Lupinacci’s research focuses on how people, specifically educators, learn to both identify and examine destructive habits of modern human culture. His work proposes that, through education, teachers can be leaders in confronting dominant assumptions about existing as individuals separate from and superior to the greater ecological systems to which we belong. Hosted by the WSU Common Reading Program (Pullman).
