Documentary: “21 UP South Africa: Mandela’s Children”

May 11, 2020 - July 31, 2020

To participate in this asynchronous event, first watch the close-captioned documentary (2008, 70 min.) hosted on kanopy. Then, verify your attendance using our Qualtrics form that has been set up for this purpose. NOTE: You can participate in this asynchronous event any time by the end of summer session.

This documentary by Angus Gibson has followed a group of 14 South African children, approximately the same age as Trevor Noah, starting at the age of 7 and filming them every 7 years. This installment captures them at age 21, and looks at the trajectory that has brought them to this point in their lives as well as their aspirations. Rich and poor, black, white, and “mixed race,” these revealing portraits offer insights into the social and political upheavals that occurred throughout South Africa through the dismantling of apartheid that marks their personal history.
