Reading by Inés Hernández-Avila (Visiting Writers Series)

Inés Hernández-Avila is one of the six founders of the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association. A professor of Native American Studies at the University of California, Davis, her research focuses on the interrelationships between autonomy, the arts, spirit, and social justice. She is a poet, scholar, translator, visual artists, and a member of Luk’upsiimey/The North Star Collective, a group of Niimiipuu/Nez Perce creative writers and language workers. Her work includes collaboration with the Library of Congress to produce the site La Palabra Indigenous Voices. Throughout her career, Hernández-Avila has been a bridge between Chincanx and Native American studies and communities, as well as between Native writers in the U.S. and Indigenous writers in Mexico, Guatemala, and Chile.
