We close this year’s Common Reading series centered on Tales of Two Americas with the screening of a documentary that asks whether the “American Dream” of home ownership presents a false promise. While the U.S. government’s postwar housing policy created the world’s largest middle class, it also set America on two divergent paths—one of perceived wealth and the other of systematically defunded, segregated communities. This film makes the case that understanding the inequalities that were systematically created in housing helps us understand a host of inequalities that persist into the 21^st century.
