“Refugees and the Origins of America: A New History”

November 13, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Jesse Spohnholz will discuss the refugee crises associated with Europeans’ discovery of the Americas, and describe the refugees who fled from Europe, including English Puritans, French Huguenots, Jews, and Muslims. However, he argues that, despite the hardships of these people, we find far more significant refugee crises among people in the African diaspora escaping slavery, and displaced indigenous Americans fleeing war, enslavement, and dislocation, as a result of European colonialism.
